Somerset Community College

Somerset Community College’s enrollment has now surpassed 6,300 as it is the leading educator in the region with multiple campus locations, and a presence of 6 Kentucky colleges/universities offering courses and degree programs, including UK, which has grown from 1 (EKU) in 2003.  5 more campus buildings have been constructed, 2 more are planned, and expansion continues with a road that will connect the campus to the local municipal airport, as an aircraft maintenance program was officially launched in 2006 (one of only 2 in Kentucky).

Provost Honeycutt with Marketing Director Dave Cazalet

“The population of the city of Somerset is misleading – we are the regional hub of activity with a service area of 400,000 people in a 100 mile radius.  That’s pretty large, and we’re growing steadily, and so is SCC.

In 2007, SCC will begin offering to the top high school seniors in our service area courses at half the tuition rate as long as they maintain their GPAs.  We feel the quality of many of our core curriculum and entry-level college courses are on par with state colleges.

We service 14-16 counties and 100 miles in any direction from our main campus here in Somerset, with 4 satellite campuses.  We are no longer just for the non-traditional student, but a

contributor to the education or our entire service area.”  Prevost Tony Honeycutt

Still a compelling bargain, the tuition at SCC is less than half of state college tuition and a fraction of private college tuition, and local high school students are offered free tuition classes in dual credit curriculums.  SCC has partnerships with both 4-year degree programs, which can be earned at SCC campus locations, 2 universities offer Masters degrees, and of course, the 60 hour AA degrees are awarded here and transferable to 4 year colleges.  According to Prevost Honeycutt (above), more than 150 high school students are enrolled at SCC.

Notes on SCC:

  • Complemented by the Center for Rural Development’s high-tech meeting and virtual meeting and learning centers, we have established a model for development of non-urban areas but we are “connected” to the world.

  • All 8 nursing and medical training programs are accredited – this means well-trained professionals to support LCRH and staff physicians as they grow their business.

  • State-of-the-art machine tool technology and aircraft maintenance programs are on the main campus – here students are trained and certified to service power plants.

  • SCC has an active Theater and Art program that encourages youth involvement, including the annual youth drama camp.

  • Other art and cultural activities include a traveling vocal ensemble which will tour Italy this year (in 2006 SCC earned 3rd place in an international contest, the annual Harriet Simpson Arnow Conference and writing workshops.

According to Marketing Director Dave Cazalet:

“We are hoping to obtain funding for a new Fine Arts building in the next few years, as we appear high on the state budget/list.  The state has a strong 10 year plan to promote community colleges as an affordable approach to post-secondary education and technical training.  For the hospital, we have great programs, all nationally accredited, to supply LCRH competent, well-trained staff.  Technology is going to drive the curriculum of the college over the next 10 years, and our IT program has already grown a great deal.”
