Somerset Christian School

Somerset Christian School completed construction of its stately campus, just outside of our historical district in 2005-2006.  A maturing school, a small class of 16 seniors graduated last year, all going on to college.  SCS, an accredited school, also qualifies for the Kentucky KEES program, which awards graduates with scholarship money.  14 of the 16 seniors this year are enrolled at Somerset Community College taking courses for dual credit (up to 9 hours is offered free of tuition by SCC).

SCS is structured differently, and according to Principal John Hale, formerly a 20+ year public school principal, the testing, and curriculum, is harder:  While the public schools require a minimum of 3 Science, Math, ad English classes, SCS requires 4.  John describes the curriculum as “college preparatory, and the school adheres to the Stanford Achievement test, which is a national test, vs. a state test (CATS), which John also believes is a harder test with a broader academic scope and objective testing vs. open-response questions in some subject matter.

While not as many AP courses are yet offered at SCS, the number is growing, and the school expects to offer an extensive line of virtual AP courses.

The Christian faith is taught at SCS with an emphasis on the scripture and not theology, in order to promote a welcoming environment for all Christian denominations (high school students are required to complete 4 credits of Bible Study classes).

All major sports are offered at SCS except football, including golf, volleyball, as well as Varsity and JV.  The school is part of the Kentucky Christian Athletic Association, is comprised of approximately 35 member schools.  In 2006-2007 the Girls Varsity and JV teams were state champs!

Children sign an Honor Code and pledge not to cheat or plagiarize the work of others.  Parents endorse a statement of faith to promote a Christian learning culture.

Tuition is a now $335 per month for full-day preschool through grade 12 and $225 for half day preschool and kindergarten.  Reduced tuition is given to families with more than one student.

Ally Maynard:

KCAA’s “Miss Volleyball” in 2007, and in Student Government among many clubs, Ally is a 3.8 GPA graduate who will attend Eastern Kentucky University.  As much as she loves volleyball and was welcome to play for EKU, she plans to be a Pediatric Dentist (her father is a dentist) and wants to focus on her academics.

“I feel the reason our volleyball team did so well is because we have been playing together as a team for many years.  In the same respect, many of my classmates have been together, so we are not just friends, but study partners who are encouraging and work together, which paid off in school as well.  I really liked having very small class sizes – our school is like a community.

My best memory of going to school here are our “field days,” where each year we take a ‘retreat’ from class and have a big school picnic.  One year we had a big ‘slip and slide’ and a cook out that student government provided the students.  I remember how nice it was to see even the most introverted of our classmates laughing and having fun, just being kids.”
